Calories vs. Nutrition

Darren Craddock

For years we have been taught that nutrition is based upon calories, however modern research shows that not all calories are counted the same. In fact much of our common daily diet is filled with calories that make you feel temporarily full and satisfied but which provide little nutritional value. These are known more and more as “empty” calories because while they may have calorific value, they lack the density of nutritional elements that we need to perform our body’s essential functions. So while a piece of white bread may have a similar calorie profile as a piece of wholegrain bread, the difference in vitamin, mineral, phytochemical, protein and antioxidant content, is dramatic.

In actuality, the food processors have to add back vitamins, which are frequently synthetically derived and may look good on the label but give no benefit and some would argue create a detrimental effect on our health.

I encourage everyone to look at what you are eating.  So much is wasted on empty calories and nutrition.  For instance buying Iceberg lettuce vs. leafy greens.  There is basically zero nutrient value in Iceberg lettuce but because it is a “lettuce” you think you are getting nutrition.  Do not be fooled.  If you eat food that is nutrient dense, you will have to eat less, spend less money while in turn you will improve your health and feel better.  Simple solutions with monumental impact.
