Crop Shortage, I have answered my own question

Yesterday I was wondering why we are seeing huge price increases in corn and soybeans and why, with the 8th largest crop on record we were facing food shortages. I now have the answer and it is a legislative and EPA issue. EPA requires that almost 30% of the current crop be used for ‘alternative fuel’. Therein lies the issue!

With the stroke of a pen (more likely several pens) the coming food crisis would be over and we could go back to our business as usual as well as many people across the world, who by the way wouldn’t have to worry about tomorrow’s meal!

Don’t get me started on the futility and outright economic fumble the entire ethanol program really is! We lose money on every single gallon. I say we in the sense that ‘we the people’ fund the subsidy that is required to make it feasible to use in fuel.

We have a huge boondogle here that needs some fine tuning if you will. Given the state of the current crop and the dismal projections on the actual harvest, the world could be in some pretty big trouble in the coming months and years.

The futility of big government planning and running anything must be self evident at this point to everyone. Less and smaller government is the key to me. Oh yeah and no ‘professional’ politicians.
