Flu seems curiously cagey this season

Americans are battling a severe bout of flu that has arrived earlier than expected, leaving many pharmacy shelves and clinics lacking flu vaccines.

The Centers for Disease Control each year monitor flu strains around the world to determine which will circulate in the United States. This year’s vaccine targets three strains: two strains of Influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2), one of Influenza B, according to the CDC.

But local doctors are seeing a sizeable number of patients with influenza-like illnesses, or ILI, who have received flu shots.

“The flu vaccine is not 100 percent effective, it’s about 60 to 70 percent effective for healthy individuals and even less effective for elderly people or people with low immune systems,” said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner.

HPV vaccination for boys recommended by CDC; Health experts believe rates will fall if boys and girls receive vaccine

Health authorities on Friday urged all boys age 11-12 to get a routine vaccination against the most common sexually transmitted disease, human papillomavirus, or HPV.

Other changes as part of an annual update to immunization schedules included a recommended hepatitis B vaccine to the protect the livers of adults up to age 60 who have diabetes and a vaccine against whooping cough for pregnant women.

The updates, agreed upon by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), were published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report of February 3.

The HPV vaccine has been approved for girls since 2006 but the CDC had not expressly urged it for boys, though boys were included among those who could receive it to prevent certain cancers and genital warts.

ATLANTA — A government panel is now recommending that virtually all Americans get a flu shot each year, starting this fall.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices had gradually been expanding its recommendation for flu shots – 85 percent of Americans were already included.

On Wednesday, the panel voted to recommend a seasonal flu vaccination for everyone except babies younger than 6 months and those with egg allergies or other unusual conditions.

The panel’s recommendation now goes to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC usually follows the panel’s advice and spreads the message to doctors and hospitals across the country.

“Now no one should say ‘Should I or shouldn’t I?’” said Dr. Anthony Fiore, a CDC flu specialist.

CDC vaccination recommendations tend to be influential with the doctors who give the shots and the health insurers who pay for them.

Flu shots are already recommended for 85 percent of the U.S. public, including pregnant women, children older than 6 months, adults 50 and older, people with certain chronic health conditions, health care workers and those who take care of people in a recommended group. The only people who weren’t specifically included were healthy people ages 19 to 49 who don’t have close contact with anyone at risk of flu and its complications.

But only about 33 percent of Americans actually get a flu shot, and unusually millions and millions of doses get thrown away annually.

The swine flu pandemic that hit last year caused a new momentum for flu vaccinations. Virtually all the 114 million doses of seasonal flu vaccine doses made were distributed, and more young adults and children got the swine flu vaccine than usually come out for seasonal flu.

The panel voted 11 to 0 – with one abstention – for the recommendation, prompting a short round of applause in the CDC auditorium where the meeting was held. Some public health experts and physicians had been pushing for a universal flu vaccination recommendation for more than 10 years.

Also on Wednesday, the panel gave its nod to a proposed formulation of next year’s seasonal flu vaccine. The vaccine will be built to protect against three strains of flu scientists think will be circulating next fall and winter. Swine flu is to be one of the strains incorporated into the vaccine.

At past meetings, the panel stopped short of recommending flu shots for everyone. Panel members were mindful of a history of temporary flu vaccine shortages in the United States. They worried a universal recommendation might cause demand to far surpass supply and endanger those at the highest risk of life-threatening flu complications.

“Yet every year we wasted millions and millions of doses,” said Dr. Gregory Poland, a Mayo Clinic infectious diseases expert who for years has passionately pushed the panel to recommend flu shots for all.

The swine flu vaccine campaign appears to be ending the same way. Doses were scarce when the swine flu vaccine first became available in early October, but now roughly 90 million people have been vaccinated, demand is dying and millions of doses are unused.

Swine flu provided another argument for universal vaccination. The new virus proved to be unusually dangerous to young adults, and also took a surprising toll on Native Americans and obese people. Many of those hospitalized and killed by swine flu were not in groups previously recommended for annual flu shots, and that fact was another reason to expand the vaccination recommendation, experts said.

There are a few exceptions to the universal recommendation. Children under 6 months of age, who have undeveloped immune systems, will continue to be exempt. So too will people who have egg allergies (the vaccine is made using eggs) and those who have had certain severe reactions to flu shots in the past.

The panel also decided that elderly people can consider a new, revved-up version of the seasonal flu shot. It’s a Sanofi Pasteur vaccine for adults 65 and older.

In years when the flu shot is well matched to circulating flu viruses, vaccine is 70 to 90 percent effective in people younger than 65, the CDC estimates. But it tends to be only 30 to 70 percent effective in those who are older because they generally have weakened immune systems.

The Sanofi vaccine – called Fluzone High-Dose – has four times as much immunity-building antibodies as a standard dose. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccine in December, and it should be available for the 2010-2011 flu season. It would cost about $25 a shot, or about twice the standard version.

The panel did not state a preference for the vaccine, however. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccine through an accelerated process, and Sanofi is to do further studies to show the shot reduces flu illnesses.

I urge everyone to think carefully about vaccinations. The premise is that you can stop specific germs from making you sick. This could not be further from the truth! With the second wave of H1N1 infections having crested in the United States, leading epidemiologists are predicting that the pandemic could end up ranking as the mildest since modern medicine began documenting influenza outbreaks.

Experts warn that the flu is notoriously unpredictable, but several recent analyses, including one released late Monday, indicate that the death toll is likely to be far lower than the number of fatalities caused by past pandemics.

The predictions are being met with a mix of skepticism, relief and trepidation: Public health officials worry that people may become complacent about getting vaccinated, which could prove disastrous if a third wave of infections swells later this winter or the virus mutates into a more dangerous form.

“I think it is very likely to be the mildest pandemic on record,” said Marc Lipsitch, an epidemiology professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, who led a federally funded analysis with researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and elsewhere published online Monday by the journal PLoS Medicine.

The analysis, based on data collected in New York City and Milwaukee, indicates that the virus may directly cause 6,000 to 45,000 deaths by the end of the winter, with the final toll probably falling between 10,000 and 15,000, Lipsitch said. In the worst-case scenario, the swine flu pandemic would kill no more than about 60,000 people, his new analysis concluded.

Several experts noted that even if the overall death toll does end up being relatively low, the pandemic already has taken an unusually high number of children and young adults.

“We’ve had hundreds of deaths among children, which is a tragedy any way you look at it,” said Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

A typical flu season is associated with an average of 36,000 deaths in the United States, and an estimate released in August by a presidential advisory panel that Lipsitch was involved in predicted that the 2009 H1N1 virus could kill 30,000 to 90,000 in this country.

“Those were the best estimates we could make at the time based on the data available at the time,” he said. “We now have much better data to make estimates from.”

When the presidential council’s estimate was made, experts thought the virus could make up to 30 percent of the population sick. So far, the virus appears to be causing symptoms in a much smaller proportion, perhaps 15 percent, Lipsitch said.

The new analysis also indicates that the pandemic’s “symptomatic case-fatality ratio” — the percentage of those who become ill and die — has been far lower than the previous three pandemics.

“If things continue as they’ve gone so far, this could turn out to be quite mild,” said Ira M. Longini Jr., a professor of biostatistics at the University of Washington in Seattle who has calculated a similarly low case-fatality rate based on CDC data.

Several experts praised the new analysis as the most sophisticated and therefore reliable to date.

“From what we know now, it would appear this is the mildest, both compared to 1968 and 1957 and certainly 1918,” said Neal M. Ferguson, an epidemiologist at Imperial College in London who advises the World Health Organization and the Health and Human Services Department. The pattern appears to be consistent in other developed countries, such as Britain, he noted.

Others, however, cautioned that previous pandemics have produced deadly late-winter waves, which could occur in this case. More older people could also become infected, which could also increase the toll.

“I would hold my horses until we are through the winter,” said Lone Simonsen, a research professor at George Washington University.

To encourage Americans to continue to get vaccinated, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a new multimedia advertising campaign Monday aimed at countering complacency. After a slow start, more than 80 million doses of vaccine are now available, she said.

“We have to seize this opportunity as disease is going down slightly to remind folks how important this is,” she said.

While agreeing that people should continue to be inoculated, Lipsitch and others said they doubt that a major increase in deaths would occur in a third wave without some significant shift in the virus.

“There’s a faint possibility,” Ferguson said. “But I don’t think there will be a major change.”

One major reason for the relatively low death toll is that the elderly have largely been unaffected, apparently because many have some immunity against the disease. The 36,000 deaths blamed on a typical flu season include many that are caused by heart attacks, strokes and other complications associated with the flu among seniors and people with other health problems. About 9,000 deaths are directly caused by the influenza virus during a typical flu season.

“Sometimes Mother Nature throws us a break,” said Howard Markel, director of the Center for the History of Medicine at the University of Michigan.

But other factors may also be playing a role, including the virus being less likely to cause illness than viruses involved in previous pandemics, as well as better medical care available than in previous decades, such as antiviral drugs and more sophisticated intensive-care techniques.

“In 1918, it was really prehistoric medical care,” Markel said. “In 1957, we really didn’t have intensive care. In 1968, we were starting to have it, but it was nothing like we have today.”

Nonetheless, Lipsitch and others stressed that the multibillion-dollar vaccination campaign and other intense responses were appropriate, given the uncertainty of what the nation and world was facing.

“We got lucky,” Lipsitch said. “But if we didn’t have a plan in place and we had 60,000 or 70,000 deaths, people would have been justifiably outraged.”

During the week of October 11-17, 2009, a review of the key indictors found that influenza activity continued to increase in the United States from the previous week. Below is a summary of the most recent key indicators:

* Visits to doctors for influenza-like illness (ILI) increased steeply since last week in the United States, and overall, are much higher than what is expected for this time of the year. ILI activity now is higher than what is seen during the peak of many regular flu seasons.

* Total influenza hospitalization rates for laboratory-confirmed flu are climbing and are higher than expected for this time of year.

* The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) based on the 122 Cities Report has increased and has been higher than what is expected at this time of year for two weeks. The FTC, you see, applies a completely different standard of proof against dietary supplements than to vaccines. According to FTC staff, “…the FTC Act, 15 U.S.C. SS 41 et seq., requires that claims that a dietary supplement can prevent, treat, or cure human infection with the H1N1 virus, must be supported by well-controlled human clinical studies at the time the claims are made.”

And yet, at the same time, there are no well-controlled human clinical studies backing the efficacy of vaccines. They simply don’t exist.

Thus, vaccines can be approved based on wishful thinking while dietary supplements must be subjected to “rigorous scientific study.”

Enslaved by the medical regime

How is that fair? It isn’t. The game is rigged from the start to allow drugs and vaccines to be sold based on the flimsiest of evidence while natural remedies are routinely suppressed by holding them to an impossible standard.

This is similar to the way in which blacks were prevented from voting in America throughout the 20th century. The people who controlled the voting booths would issue “IQ tests” to anyone who tried to vote. The tests were rigged to fail all blacks while allowing whites to easily pass (and therefore vote).

The whole system was rigged from the start to create the illusion of fairness even though the outcome had already been pre-decided. This same brand of racism is now operating in modern medicine, except it’s drugism instead of racism. But the outcome has already been decided by the FDA just the same: All natural products will be denied, while all vaccines will be approved. This is how the system is rigged.

Just so you understand how ludicrous this is, what the FTC / FDA tag-team is saying is that herbs, superfoods and other natural substances that are naturally biocompatible with your body are, in essence, guilty until proven innocent. Meanwhile vaccines made in a lab with synthetic chemicals, mercury derivatives and DNA fragments from diseased animals are considered safe and effective by default, even in the absence of any real science. Do you see how twisted and dangerous this whole system has become?

Censoring true statements to silence natural health proponents

Both the FTC and FDA have a long history of using tactics of extreme intimidation in an attempt to censor people who provide natural remedies that compete with sales of pharmaceuticals. When a doctor can’t even make a true scientific statement about the medicinal properties of an herb without being threatened by the FTC, it’s a sure sign that what was supposed to be a regulatory agency has now become a criminal racket serving the interests of Big Pharma.

Here’s one statement the FTC / FDA letter “accuses” Dr. Weil of making: “Astragalus … is … used traditionally to ward off colds and flu, and has demonstrated both antiviral and immune-boosting effects in scientific investigation.”

Is there anything false in that statement? Anything misleading? Not in the least. It’s a statement backed by reality. Astragalus does, indeed, have powerful antiviral and immune-boosting properties. And yet for daring to make this simple, true statement on the internet, Dr. Weil has been threatened by the FTC with criminal prosecution. Our own U.S. government has threatened to arrest him, destroy his business, criminally prosecute him, confiscate his products, financially ruin his company and add him to a list of “violators.” That sounds more like Nazi Germany than America, doesn’t it? Yet it’s happening in America right now.

What other “crimes” has Dr. Weil committed? He dared to make a second true statement about astragalus:

“The synergistic combination of immune modulators [found in the Immune Support Formula] is especially useful for those who tend to get every bug that goes around during the winter.”

Once again, another true statement. It’s like saying “vitamin C boosts immune function,” or “vitamin D helps prevent cancer.” Both are true statements, but both have been outlawed in America by the FTC racket. FTC / FDA thugs and crimes against humanity

If you really think about what’s going on here with the FTC / FDA intimidation tactics, you realize that if a pandemic really does start to kill people, it is these FTC / FDA bureaucrats who will have blood on their hands.

Why? Because even in a time when prescription anti-virals don’t work, and vaccines are in short supply (and don’t work anyway), these government thugs are running around silencing and intimidating the very people offering real solutions for immune system protection. When the virus mutates, rendering the vaccines worthless, and the anti-virals are long gone, how are Americans supposed to protect themselves against a pandemic virus? The FTC and FDA have made certain that all available “natural” options have been eliminated! Hospitals have been instructed to turn people away. The CDC has instructed states to stop tracking the H1N1 swine flu altogether.

In other words, these health authorities are hanging the American people out to dry. They’re betraying the very people they claim to serve.

Should a pandemic unfold that really starts to kill a large number of people, these two agencies will be directly contributing to the deaths of people who could have been saved by natural remedies like Astragalus, or Reishi mushrooms, or Vitamin D, or other nutritional products. And while you may not call that murder, it is precisely the definition of negligent homicide. “FDA is taking urgent measures to protect consumers from products that, without approval or authorization by FDA, claim to diagnose, mitigate, prevent, treat or cure H1N1 Flu Virus in people.”

At the same time, of course, the only products that receive approval from the FDA are vaccines and prescription medications. The FDA’s official position is that there is no such thing as any herb, any plant, any nutrient or any dietary supplement that has any beneficial effect on the human body. As ridiculous as this sounds, it is precisely the current position of the FDA! Thus, no herb, plant, nutrient or supplement can EVER be approved by the FDA to protect against influenza.

As you’ve figured out, the whole game is rigged from the start. Herbs that have anti-viral properties will never be approved as anti-virals. And, frankly, for the people running natural product companies to try to play the “FDA game” is useless. You can never appease tyranny. Trying to “conform” to the requirements of the FDA and FTC is like Jewish prisoners trying to conform to the wishes of Hitler. You’ve been condemned from the start! Stop playing their game… stop bowing down to the false authority of the FTC and FDA. Only a handful of health product companies like Daniel Chapter One have demonstrated the courage to fight tyranny and take a stand for health freedom (http://www.naturalnews.com/026970_h…).

The FDA isn’t interested in what works to stop the flu. It’s is only interested in propping up the quack profits of one industry at any cost. And one day, that cost may be extracted in terms of dead Americans who could have been saved with natural remedies like Dr. Weil’s immune support product.

And that, my friends, is what makes the FDA a criminal racket. It is being operated today as a blatant criminal enterprise that directly contributes to the suffering and death of the American people. These bureaucrats would rather see helpless victims die than lose a dollar of profit for Big Pharma. They have sold out the American people for the almighty dollar. Truth be damned.

It’s time to end this medical police state

When true statements about botany are outlawed, and the only statements allowed to be made about H1N1 flu protection are based on profit-driven lies, and the very leaders who try to help the People (like Dr. Weil) are threatened with being arrested as criminals and having their companies shut down at gunpoint, that’s when you know you live in a “1984″-style medical police state.

In American medicine today, you don’t live in a free society. You don’t have a free choice about medicine. You are given the false choice of which vaccine to take: Nasal or Injection. That’s the choice you’ve been given. All other options (anti-viral herbs, homeopathy, vitamin D, etc.) are being eliminated “for your protection.”

For all those who voted for Obama, by the way, keep in mind this criminal FDA racket continues to operate in full swing under the Obama administration, just as it did under the Bush Administration. Sadly, Obama has done absolutely nothing to halt the tyranny against natural product companies. In fact, under Obama, this action has been accelerated by the FTC and FDA. It’s worse now than ever before, and with Big Government getting even bigger — and more lawmakers calling for increased FDA funding — this problem is only bound to get worse.

The U.S. Justice Department recently nailed Pfizer with a $1.3 billion criminal fine after prosecuting the company for paying kickbacks to doctors and committing marketing fraud (http://www.naturalnews.com/027276_P…). My only question is: When will the Justice Department investigate and prosecute the criminals at the FDA and FTC who are putting the lives of Americans at risk by destroying the natural product industry precisely as we face a global pandemic?

Get Genetically Engineered Vaccines Out of Organic!

Vaccines are allowed for use in organic livestock production. However, many vaccines on the market today are genetically engineered, and, according to federal law, those vaccines are supposed to be excluded from organic production. Currently, many genetically engineered vaccines are being used in organic livestock production, without the review or approval of the National Organic Standards Board, the organic oversight board that is supposed to control what inputs can legally be used in organic production.

The National Organic Standards Board will be considering a recommendation at their November 3-5 meeting in Washington, DC to allow unrestricted use of genetically engineered vaccines in organic livestock production.

The Organic Consumers Association opposes the use of genetically engineered vaccines, and all GMOs, in organic production. Please join us in the telling the NOSB to reject the recommendation for unlimited use of GMO vaccines and instead to adhere to the regulation that requires each GE vaccine to be individually reviewed.

Vetrinarians are warning, “The widespread dissemination of live GE viruses is a very costly, high-risk, low health priority that if not prohibited or controlled internationally could amount to a biomeolecular assault on the life community of planet Earth. It could, through viral mutations and non-target host transformations, lead to the devastation of human civilization, and to animal populations wild and domestic”

There are also environmental risks. The production of genetically engineered animal vaccines has already resulted in the contamination of food crops. Biotech firm ProdiGene tainted half a million bushels of soybeans with a trial vaccine for a pig disease, transmissible gastroenteritis. The incident is believed to have occurred because the soybeans were planted on the same site used to grow genetically modified pharmaceutical corn the previous year. Secretary Vilsack, then Iowa governor, defended the company, cautioning,”we should not overreact and hamstring this industry or limit Iowa’s ability to participate in this emerging industry.”

Health officials say those most at risk from swine flu are:

• Pregnant women.

• Those who live with or care for children under the age of 6 months.

• Health-care and emergency-service workers.

• Those age 6 months to 24 years.

• Anyone age 25 to 64 at higher risk because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

In preparation for swine-flu vaccinations next month, Washington’s Health Department on Thursday temporarily suspended a rule that limits the amount of a mercury preservative in vaccines given to pregnant women and children under the age of 3.

The preservative, thimerosal, has never been linked to any health problems, said Secretary of Health Mary Selecky. But a vocal minority believes the compound could be linked to autism. The state Legislature adopted the limit in 2006.

Thimerosal has been eliminated from most vaccines in the United States, but it will be added to the bulk of the swine-flu vaccine being produced to stem a pandemic that health officials estimate could sicken more than a third of the state’s residents.

Pregnant women and young children are considered at high risk for swine flu, and lifting the mercury limits will give them quicker access to the vaccine, Selecky said.

“It’s vital that everyone in a high-risk group has the choice to be vaccinated when swine-flu vaccine becomes available,” she said.

About 15 percent of the vaccine supply will be mercury-free, but people may have to wait longer for it to become available.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Thursday that 6 million to 7 million doses of the vaccine will be available the first week in October, mainly in the form of a nasal spray called FluMist.

About 40 million flu shots should be ready by the middle of October, with an additional 10 million to 20 million doses rolling off the assembly lines every week after that for a total of 250 million doses.

“We will have enough vaccine to immunize every American who wants to be immunized,” Sebelius said in a briefing. “But it won’t all be available at the same time.”

The vaccine itself will be free, Sebelius said, but health-care providers can charge to administer it.

Thimerosal will be added to the vaccine because it is being produced in vials that contain enough medication for 10 shots. The mercury compound kills bacteria, lowering the risk that the drug will be contaminated by needles used to withdraw separate doses.

“Every time you introduce a needle, you run a risk of introducing a potential contaminant,” said Dr. Tony Marfin, state epidemiologist for infectious disease.

Mercury-free vaccine will be produced in single-dose vials. Nasal sprays do not contain mercury but are not recommended for children under the age of 2 and pregnant women, because they contain live, weakened virus.

An analysis published Thursday also found that the nasal spray is less effective than shots in adults under 50.

Selecky said the law limiting the mercury preservative will be suspended for six months and applies only to the swine-flu vaccines.

Once common in vaccines, thimerosal has been largely phased out in most wealthy nations. Children’s vaccines in the United States are almost exclusively mercury-free, single-dose injections.

However, numerous studies have found no link between thimerosal and disorders in children.

Early results with the new vaccine against swine flu, technically known as H1N1, show it quickly induces a strong immune response, and most people over the age of 10 will require only a single dose.

The rate of side effects also appears to be low. Out of nearly 44,000 people inoculated in China, 14 “adverse events” have been reported, all very mild, said Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny, director of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Initiative for Vaccine Research.

WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will carefully monitor side effects, she said.

After 1976′s mass vaccination against a different swine-flu strain, about 500 people developed a neurological disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), and some died.

Scientists still haven’t figured out why, but there has never again been a connection between flu vaccine and GBS, Marfin said.

Americans are often blasé about flu, with less than half of people — including health-care workers — bothering to get annual shots.

One reason may be that flu shots are not as effective as many other vaccines, offering about 60 to 70 percent protection against the seasonal virus. That’s largely because scientists have to guess which strains will be circulating each year.

With swine flu, they know exactly which strain is involved, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, chief health officer for the CDC’s H1N1 response. “We would expect the vaccine to be very effective against the disease we are seeing.”

But will it be ready in time?

“Right now we’re in a race with the virus and the vaccine,” she said.

Flu usually peaks in Washington in February and March, but the new swine-flu strain is already hitting the region. Both Washington State University and the University of Washington have reported outbreaks, and absenteeism exceeds 10 percent at some local schools.

The state is working with clinics, doctors, hospitals and others to set up inoculation programs — and bracing for crowds.

“We are expecting high interest,” Selecky said.
